What Is Crohn's Disease? And what is Ulcerative Colitis?
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Together with Ulcerative Colitis, it is the most common chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis fall into the category of the disease autoimmune diseases.
Crohn's disease often manifests itself at the junction from the small to the large intestine, but can occur anywhere in the intestinal tract.
Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic, regularly recurring inflammation of the colon.
Treating Crohn's Disease.
BodySwitch has developed a unique approach in which we look to the core for the causes of the chronic inflammation.
To find out the cause of the disease, we make an extensive analysis of your complaints. Our approach is integral, which means that we look at your health in a broad sense and, where necessary, use specialized laboratory tests (blood and faeces). This thorough and structured research method gives us clues that lead to the causes of the disease.
In our view, a disease can only be treated effectively if the cause is known. Based on the results of the examination, we draw up a personal treatment plan.
As a result, we do not combat the symptoms, but the problem is tackled from the core.
Treat the cause, not the symptoms!
Our Crohn's disease treatment is aimed at making you feel better quickly, symptoms diminish, you have more energy and the quality of life increases significantly.

Crohn's disease treatment plan
Step 1: Laboratory research
Laboratory testing is essential for Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Diagnosis in patients is often based on an MRI scan and measurement of values such as Calprotectin (a chronic inflammatory marker measured in faeces) and CRP (an inflammatory marker in blood). This has established that there is a chronic inflammatory condition, but not the cause of these inflammations.
We analyze pathogenic factors such as parasites, fungi, viruses and bacteria and food intolerances in blood and faeces. Think of intolerances to gluten and dairy.
Our goal is to always work together with the treating (MDL) doctor, so that in consultation the best can be offered for the patient.
Step 2: Personal treatment plan
We make a personal treatment plan for you based on the results of the laboratory research. A mix of different factors plays a role in every patient. Your situation is unique and so is your treatment plan.
The treatment plan aims to address the factors that cause the disease. With the right nutrition and the use of specialised and targeted nutritional supplements, infections are tackled, nutritional deficiencies are supplemented and the inflammations are calmed. Your inflammatory levels become stable and inflammation often disappears within a short time. Then we work on the best possible recovery.
With the personal nutrition and supplement plan we support the body as optimally as possible. Unfortunately, any damage caused by operations cannot be repaired. In most cases, however, the situation can be stabilized and the quality of life can be significantly improved.
Step 3: Guidance and result.
The results of your treatment partly depend on your motivation and discipline. To guide you in this, our specialists pay a lot of attention to coaching and knowledge transfer, so that you are also able to maintain the result achieved after the process itself.
We regularly schedule follow-up consultations to properly monitor progress. During the consultations we discuss the interim results with you. If necessary, we will have additional laboratory tests performed and, based on the results, we will adjust the treatment plan in the meantime.
In this way we work together towards the best possible result.
Side Effects and Medication:
Our starting point is that good treatment has no side effects. Many patients who come to us use heavy medication, which they would like to get rid of because of the serious side effects that some drugs have.
An example of this is the drug group "immunosuppressants", which, as it were, slow down or turn off the immune system. These drugs can allow bacterial infections free rein to spread further. This can make the clinical picture worse. And sometimes patients have already undergone many operations up to the stage of placing a stoma.
Our treatment is aimed at making you feel better, reduce complaints and that you will have more energy. In many patients, medication is often (quite quickly) no longer necessary after the start of treatment.
Unfortunately, the damage caused by operations cannot be repaired. In most cases, however, the health situation can be stabilized and the quality of life improved considerably.

Crohn's Disease: Backgrounds and Insights
Background information:
A disease is often a name given to a particular circumstance. In the case of Crohn's, this is the name given to a chronic inflammatory condition of the intestinal tract. Crohn's disease, or enteritis regionalis, is named after the American physician Burrill Crohn (1884 - 1983).
In 1932 the symptoms are described in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) by Dr. Oppenheimer, Dr. Ginzburg and assistant Burrill Crohn. In the article, the researchers' names are listed alphabetically, listing Burrill B. Crohn's first and Crohn's disease named after him.
In 1935, Burrill B. Crohn was elected president of the American Gastroenterological Association. He died in 1983 at the age of 99.
Heredity or environmental factors?
At the time when Burill described Crohn's “disease” not much was known about the influence of our environment on our DNA; the epi-genetics.
In our view, a disease in itself is not hereditary, but the factors that cause the disease can be hereditary. Think of food intolerances to, for example, lactose, dairy or gluten. Often the patient is not aware of this, because it has not yet been (properly) established.
Scientific developments within epi-genetics follow each other at a rapid pace. We are gaining insight into the effects of environmental factors that influence our health. Therefore, we can now conclude that many of our illnesses are caused by these factors.
In epigenetics one studies the reversible hereditary change in gene functions. These changes occur without changes in the DNA and are transferable to subsequent generations. Even normal nutrients, but also toxins and stress can change the expression of genes and make us healthy or sick.
BodySwitch focuses mainly on the epigenetic factors and thus environmental factors in the treatment of the patient.
