Leaking bowel

Leaky gut – Leaky gut: cause of many complaints”
A so-called “leaky gut” is called leaky gut syndrome. Classically, it is not yet recognized as a disease.

Cause of a leaky gut
This condition occurs when the mucosa on the inside of the gastrointestinal tract is damaged due to silent inflammation, also called log grade inflammation. The mucous membrane of the intestines then has increased permeability, also called hyperpermeability. Regularly, this diagnosis is rarely made even though this is a condition that is common, and increasingly common, and can cause many health problems. You can actually think of the increased permeability of the mucosa as a defense that has been weakened. The intestines, especially the mucosa, have an important function in our immune system (defense system).

Because there is increased permeability of the mucous membrane (there are small holes in it, which has weakened the defenses), these openings allow bacteria, fungi, parasites and their waste products (toxins – poisonous substances), undigested food particles and waste products, which are not usually absorbed into the blood, to now enter the blood circulation.

As a result, intense immune system reactions to these undigested nutrients occur, including putting heavy pressure on the liver.

Symptoms of a leaky gut
Symptoms can be very diverse. Think fatigue, headaches, skin problems, poor sleep, palpitations, autoimmune disorders, allergies, rapid sweating when you exercise and not being able to continue, recurrent infections, digestive problems such as diarrhea, aches and pains, joint problems, depression, asthma and so on.

Often characterized by clients as “vague complaints” whose cause is not known.

Establishing a leaky gut
Leaky bowel syndrome is well diagnosed by targeted laboratory diagnostics of the intestines. It will be identified if there is leaky gut and what could possibly be the causes. Many times a parasitic load is the cause. But gluten, fungi and medication use, for example, can also be a (co)cause.

Treating a leaky gut

Once this is determined, a customized treatment plan aimed at restoring the bowel can be created.
