Thyroid problems? Nutrition is the building block for health!

Did you know that…half a million Dutch people have a thyroid gland that is too slow?

Maybe you’ve been trying to lose some weight for years, but no matter what you try, the pounds keep coming off. Moreover, you feel tired, despite actually getting a neat eight hours of sleep every night. And besides, you’re cold every now and then. You sit on the couch with a thick cardigan and thick socks while your partner is not bothered by the cold. Thyroid disease brings a lot of discomfort.

The thyroid gland is a small organ located in the neck. Even though the organ is only small, it is very important. This is because this is where hormones are produced that regulate many body functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, energy, metabolism and mood. In thyroid disorders, the thyroid gland may work too slowly, or too quickly. In the vast majority of thyroid disorders, there is a thyroid gland working too slowly. Did you know that this affects as many as half a million Dutch people?

New diet

Such figures are obviously not pretty, and being able to address thyroid problems is desirable. Many chronic diseases can be solved by adopting a healthy diet. Frank Jonkers is an orthomolecular therapist at BodySwitch Heemskerk. He says, “Many causes of autoimmune diseases, such as thyroid disease, can be traced to our diet. By identifying that, we can create a treatment plan with a new eating pattern.

What should you pay attention to?

When thyroid functions are impaired, it is difficult for the body to absorb iodine. This is unfortunate, because iodine contributes to proper growth and a functioning metabolism. Therefore, avoid foods such as soy, peanuts and raw cabbage. In fact, these foods counteract the absorption of iodine. However, gluten and dairy can also be detrimental. Frank: “Try to be aware of what you’re ingesting. Pure and unprocessed food is always preferable to pre-cooked and processed. And in doing so, we’re going to look at possible intolerances and allergies.

Supporting recovery

So healthy, pure food is perhaps the most important building block for a healthy body. But depending on your situations, supplements may also be chosen. Supplements are dietary supplements that can support recovery. Frank says, “In my practice, I like to look for the underlying causes of complaints. Thus, together we can structurally address these causes and restore balance.
