Gluten or lactose intolerance: Blog with a client’s experience part II

OMG, I HAVE BECOME SUCH A HAT

Blog from a client: ZsaZsaZsu, 08 NOVEMBER 2019

“In my previous blog, I mentioned that I was exploring my perpetual cold and that this time I hoped to find it in my diet. Expecting nothing – because if the medical profession can’t figure it out why would this help – I stepped up to a “geek in the alternative circuit,” otherwise known as an orthomolecular doctor. Strange right, looking at nutrition and not haphazardly stuffing someone with drugs? After the appointment with the alternativeist who sees food as medicine (how floaty?!), a gluten and cow’s milk intolerance was the conclusion. A best intolerance because these two are in just about all good food. Daaaaaaaaaaag burgundy life that I love so much!

Gluten first

Since I am quite fond of my latte (the most enjoyable moment of my day), I decided to go gluten-free for three months first. Seeing if that helped anything at all. It was three sad (and expensive!) months with no results. What a huge hassle to get tasty ingredients. While I spent more than ever on food, I also felt poorer than ever. Had this now become my life? To a warehouse somewhere in an industrial park to buy tasteless gluten-free pasta? Really, do me that cold then.

Hello gluten!

After these months, I decided to reintroduce gluten. Eating & drinking this way just doesn’t fit into my life. I love having drinks with friends, delicious pastas full of gluten and yummy croissants at my beach house. In addition, I have no actual pain from the intolerance. It’s not that I get abdominal pain, eczema or constant headaches. I am only a living faucet.

The other diagnosis was a lactose intolerance. But just the idea of going through life without coffee wrong made me very unhappy. So nice to know these results now, but three months without gluten didn’t help anything so why try the lactose? I embraced my burgundy life again including gluten and dairy products.

Health not important?

But it didn’t quite sit right with me. If you know that your body can’t stand something and that it is giving a clear signal, those milk, yogurt and cottage cheese taste a little less good anyway. I tried for a long time to ignore it (about 1.5 years after results alternate), but health I think is the most important thing you have in this life, so I couldn’t ignore it either. I decided to put it to the test and cut out as much lactose as possible. Starting with the delicious morning smoothies with buttermilk, the breakfast of homemade granola with cottage cheese and I experimented endlessly with rice milk, almond milk, soy milk, almond milk and oat milk in my coffee.

99% difference

And……wonderfully, my colds subsided by about 99%. This did take a few weeks, but the effect is huge! I didn’t really notice this until I went to an appointment and hadn’t checked that there were enough tissues in my bag. Normally I would rather carry tissues with me than my house key! The fact that it was not “on top of mind” right now got me thinking. Darn it; I had last reached for a pack of tissues yesterday morning.

Go, go, go!

So was the woolly man behind that desk right after all? Was my cold so simply explained as a nutritional problem? Would all those medications, the surgery, nasal sprays, sleepless nights from hours of blowing and thousands of packets of tissues (I used 6 packets on the worst days – for 12 years) not have been necessary at all if someone had taken a good look at my diet earlier? I can hardly believe the answer turned out to be so easy in the end.

I really recommend anyone with chronic problems (eczema, psoriasis, headaches, always tired, bloated belly, etc) to see an orthomolecular doctor before going to the hospital. Actually quite logical to look first at the fuel you throw into the body right? I myself was tipped to go to Bodyswitch and it has really improved the quality of my life tremendously. The ‘alternate’ has a fan!”
