BodySwitch: expert network for chronic complaints

What is Long COVID?

Lung COVID, or post-COVID syndrome, are symptoms that one is left with after going through a COVID infection. ‘Long’ from the word Long COVID means long-term: one retains long-term symptoms after infection.

We speak of Long COVID when symptoms persist for more than 4 weeks and cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis.

Did you know that 1 in 8 corona patients (from the first corona year) have long-term symptoms?

Complaints at Long COVID

People with Lung COVID have a variety of symptoms and signs. The most common complaints are:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath on exertion
  • Muscle pain
  • Loss of smell and taste
  • Concentration disorders
  • ‘Brain fog’
  • Heart palpitations
  • Pressure on the chest
  • Pain complaints
  • Hair loss

But also complaints such as anxiety, depression and sleep problems.

The diversity in complaints and symptoms after a COVID infection are partly due to the attachment of the virus to the so-called ACE2 receptors, which are located on various tissues in the body. These ACE2 receptors are located in various places in the body: lungs, brain, intestines, muscles, bloodstream, heart, kidneys and nerves.

Hence the diverse complaints seen at Long COVID.

What does a treatment at BodySwitch look like?

At BodySwitch, we work with an integrative and personalized approach. First, we will take a comprehensive history (intake) to identify your symptoms. Should it be necessary, after this we use an extensive laboratory test (including blood and stool samples) to find the cause of your symptoms.

Based on the results of the analysis, we create a personalized treatment plan that we tailor completely to you. With our approach, we fight not the symptoms, but the cause of the symptoms. This is what makes BodySwitch unique from regular care.

We will work with you through the following steps in working toward recovery:

Step 1: Removal of any viral residues

Step 2: Calming the immune system

Step 3: Repair of mitochondria

Step 4: Recovery of muscle and lung tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

We speak of Long COVID when symptoms persist for more than four weeks (after experiencing a COVID infection) and the symptoms cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis.

This varies from person to person. Recovery can take weeks, months or even years and depends on the severity of the symptoms. Without treatment, some individuals do not recover at all.

It is possible. In a portion of individuals, the symptoms diminish over time. Unfortunately, a portion of people retain symptoms that do not diminish. With the right treatment, you can stimulate and speed up the recovery process.

This is difficult to predict since each person is different. Factors that may play into the duration of recovery include current physical condition and the extent to which a person is proactive with the advice. Treatment to full recovery generally takes 6 to 12 months.

Persistent fatigue, cognitive problems, shortness of breath, muscle weakness and chest pressure. But also depression and sleep problems.

Yes, that is possible. Even after vaccination, you can still get (seriously) sick from COVID and therefore develop Long COVID.

No, Long COVID is not contagious to others. Since Long COVID can only be diagnosed after 4 weeks of symptoms, you are definitely not contagious by then. Especially in the initial period when a person becomes infected with COVID, the virus is contagious and easily transmitted to others.

Two years ago, I started feeling very tired and lame. I was in a busy phase with small children and a tough job. The family doctor thought I was toward burnout. I started to slow down and work less. Unfortunately, this did not help: the symptoms only got worse. Fortunately, through treatment at BodySwitch, I found out, what was causing my symptoms. I have had to make profound adjustments to my lifestyle and diet, but I feel fit and energetic again.

Treatment pathway Long COVID

Step 1: Analysis

We start treatment with a comprehensive analysis. To find out where your symptoms are coming from, it is necessary for us to know a lot about you. We collect this information by:

  • a comprehensive online questionnaire
  • a food diary
  • a comprehensive intake interview
  • Additional laboratory tests (blood and stool)

By analyzing all available information, we gain insight into the factors that may play a role in causing the symptoms.

Step 2: Personalized treatment plan

Based on the results of the analysis phase, we will create a personalized treatment plan for you. It is based on our four pillars: nutrition, supplementation, exercise and mindset.

Our treatment plan focuses on addressing the factors causing the chronic symptoms. Here, we provide comprehensive exercise advice specifically tailored to your conditioning situation. The goal of treatment is for you to quickly feel better and fitter and the symptoms diminish.

We prefer to cooperate with the attending physician or specialist, so that in consultation the best can be offered to the patient.

Step 3: Guidance

The results of your treatment depend in part on your motivation and discipline. Our specialists will guide you intensively in this process and pay close attention to coaching and knowledge transfer.

To properly monitor progress, we schedule regular follow-up consultations. During these consultations, we will discuss interim results with you and, if necessary, have additional laboratory tests done. If necessary, we adjust the treatment plan in the interim.
