Sicco Weertman - Orthomolecular physician Amsterdam

Orthomolecular physician Amsterdam: Sicco Weertman

Because I necessarily wanted to become a doctor, I got over this and completed my studies in mid-2007. After my medical degree, I chose cardiology, prompted in part by a logical approach to disease, results-oriented approach and long-term management of patients. First, I had another six months of experience in internal medicine. Then worked for 3 years in 3 hospitals as a physician assistant in cardiology. Although I had good content, I did not get into training because, according to the trainers, I “did not fit into the culture.” They were right about that in retrospect. I unconsciously resisted production thinking, lack of attention to the individual patient and deepening into the root cause of complaints and pathologies.

“Whatever may be the father of disease, the mother is always wrong nutrition” (Hippocrates)”

Searching for the right place, I then worked in emergency psychiatry, in a general practice in Suriname and in a nursing home facility. This experience has offered me great insight into health care in its broadest sense.

Choice of BodySwitch

Eventually, I ended up at the family medicine school. This seemed the best fit for me: close to the people, personal attention, more time, broader view, etc. In practice, however, I found that I still could not express my passion and had too little space and time to immerse myself in the individual patient. By chance, I came in contact with Frank Jonkers during my freshman year. In successive conversations, I became increasingly impressed with his vision, passionate method and logical approach to health issues. When Frank asked me to start a BodySwitch branch as well, I was immediately interested.

The idea that I could use logical thinking, based on the deeper workings of the body, focused on causes and tailored to the unique person, to work on people’s health really appealed to me. Therefore, I decided to stop the general practitioner training immediately and focus entirely on my own BodySwitch practice. Here, I finally found the opportunity to be able to look comprehensively at patient issues in the broadest sense. To search together for root causes and create a treatment plan that suits this person. It feels like it was meant to be.
